I whole-heartedly agree with the official DSA statement on the blatently illegal acts of war on Venezuela. The American government, helmed by Donald Trump, has committed war crimes with its murders of people on boats in international waters, and now with an unprovoked act of aggression, including the kidnapping of the head of state of a whole nation.
We, as Americans, routinely cry "this is not who we are" when we, as Americans, do exactly this kind of thing. This is exactly who we are, this is exactly who we have been, and this is exactly who we will be unless we actively do something to stop it.
Congress needs to get its shit together and impeach Donald Trump and every one of his cronies who enabled this. To my three members of Congress, I'm asking you for an IOU: Impeach, Oppose, Undermine. I do not care one bit about naming a post office or working on a trade deal or whatever it is you're currently up to. Impeach this clown; impeach all his cronies; impeach the judges that enabled him. Oppose this clown; block his actions, take back your constitutional power. Undermine this clown and everything that he's doing; put sand in the gears; block roadways; lapse funding; get arrested; do everything to make his plans fail. I don't want to see any of you step one foot in Delaware until you've stopped this abuse of power. To paraphrase Marisa Kabas, stop posting from Canva and do your goddamned jobs.
The Democratic Party needs to get its shit together and start actively opposing the lawlessness of this regime. The ones in Congress need to realize that they actually need to do the uncomfortable work of fighting for their people. The ones in the state house need to start shoring up Delaware to stand on its own; we're a small state, and we have very little power, but it's not nothing, and we can do more and we can do better; we can definitely protect everyone within our borders. The ones that run the party machinery need to lock the fuck in and pick a side. Are you for the people or are you for the corporations? This mealy-mouthed slop is the reason why Democrats have a bad reputation: you dance around the issue and are "deeply concerned" by war crimes.
Apart from war crimes being bad on their own, it is clear from our history that our wars abroad always find their way home. As an elected school board member, I don't have any say anything other than how our schools can better help our communities. But I can tell you this: the kids in my schools are going to be the kids with a broken parents who come home from these wars, or they're going to be ones actually fighting them in the coming years, or they're going to be the ones stopped on the street and maybe killed by the surplus military hardware from these wars that was given to the police back at home. War isn't a thing that happens to other countries; war is a thing that we do, and it affects all of us, directly or indirectly, and it's never good.
This is our country. It is a county of the people, by the people, and for the people. We have the final say in how anything happens here, but we actually have to speak up and we ultimately have to act up.
Fuck this shit.
