August 11, 2023
There wasn't much that was particularly exciting at the meeting on August 8, 2023, but I did want to talk about the ongoing fight with the UD police.
UD recently released a 22-minute video that includes video footage from the building that shows the parking lot and footage from various police body cameras. I suggest that everyone watch the video and then read what officer Battles said about the incident (see below). As I mentioned at the board meeting, the very first thing that you'll see when watching the video is that it spends the first few minutes highlighting (literally highlighting, darkening the background of everything else) a car driving through the parking lot with someone hanging out the passenger-side window. But here's the thing: that's not Mohammed's car. That video didn't come out of the system like that; somebody went through the trouble of editing it, specifically to make you, the viewer, associate Mohammed with the behavior of that first car. And that's just the beginning. Just about every highlighted item in Exhibit B (the statement from officer Battles) is directly contradicted by the video evidence (the three things that stick out as being true are (1) speaking to the people in the vehicles, (2) approaching the last vehicle, and (3) Mohammed asking what he did wrong).
Exhibit B from Case 23-06-008999, which Board Member Baqir provided at the board meeting. I have redacted the vehicle's licence plate number as well as Mohammed's birthday.
Before you watch the video, please note that it is troubling. You will hear Mohammed beg and plead with the officers, and you will see the UD police's dishonesty on full display.
However, I am very happy with how the community has rallied around Mohammed, and it is your continued love and support that will get him through this nightmare.
